The archive of the Grand Priory draws up in 33 sections. The eldest
document, dated 1220, is a Papal bull signed by Onorio III with which he granted
privileges to the Order in comparison with French bishops.
Many other Papal bulls are kept in that Archive: one of them, signed by Leone X, rectifies
an arbitration to settle a controversy between the Grand Priory of Venice and the
Dalmatian School of S. Giorgio and Trifone addressed close to the Order's Palace.
It's interesting to discover the ceremony regulating
audiences of the Maltese ambassador in Palazzo Ducale. The ambassador went there with a
procession of gondolas: he seated on the first golden gondola and many other - between
them the one called "Negrona" - followed with people who were among his suite.
Other documents describe formalities between the ambassador of the Order and the
diplomatic members accredited to the Republic of Venice (La Serenissima): we have an
amusing report concerning the presentation of the credentials to Luigi XIV and the
detailed relation of the impressive party in Versailles.
The section called "ospitalità" (=hospitality) groups documents concerning the
ancient hospital dedicated to Santa Caterina in Venice and other hospitals in Milan, Rome,
Naples and Jerusalem as well as the Auberge of the Italian Lingua in Malta. The section
called "Armamenti, Squadra, Commercio, Corsari, Prede e Schiavi" (=Equipment,
Squad, Commerce, Corsair, Prey and Slave) is very interesting.
We know that at the end of the last century there were about 700 heraldic-genealogical
proceedings for Knights accepted into the Order with noble proofs concerning 2.800
families.

EVOLUTION
Reorganization and ancient inventory
From bibliographical and documentary sources it seems clear how important was a
good care of the archive: we have many testimonies of inventories and reorganizations of
all the documents during centuries.
The first inventory we know is dated 1549, and it has been disposed by Ranuccio Farnese,
Pope Paul III’s nephew, who was Grand Prior in 1540.
Documents tell about a "new and accurate organization" disposed by the Grand
Prior Fra' Guglielmo Barbiano da Chieri in 1681: at the end of the organization a list of
documents in 2 volumes has been compiled.
In 1703 the Grand Prior Fra' Robert Solaro d’ Asti disposed a radical transformation
of the way to archive documents which have been reordered following the order of
Commendam. During this reorganization, many documents, which have been considered useless,
have been destroied.
Two new inventories have been disposed by order of 2 Grand Priors: the first one in 1757
decided by Fra' Antonio Dal Pezzo, and the second one in 1786. To do this second inventory
Fra' Francesco Maria Boccadiferro appoints Filippo Maria Vannucchi.
Napoleonic
period
In 1806 the Grand Priory has been suppressed and the all documents have been
shared between the venetian gouvernement, which put them in the State Archives, and the
receiver Fulvio Alfonso Rangone and his secretary Antonio Roda Merendis.
When Rangone died Filippo Duodo inherited the documents, and after Roda Merendis his
brother Giovanni Maria kept the other part of documents.

In 1839 the two Grand Priories of Lombardy and venice became one and the see
has been established in Venice.
In this period inquires to find lost documents started. Filippo Duodo gave the papers in
his hands back to Taddeo Scarella who was the deputy of the Grand Prior Cappellari. Even
the documents in Rota Merendis’s hands have been given back thanks to bestowal of the
half-cross.
In 1846 documents from the Grand Priory of Lombardy arrived to the Venetian Archives.
These papers were kept at Milan Ricetta and those which were at Turin Ricetta have been
given to the State Archives of that town.
Donato Carlo Botti, by order of the Grand Prior Cappellari della Colomba, gave a new
arrengement of the Archives.
Between 1884 and 1886 Grand Prior Fra' Guido Sommi Picenardi ordered a new reorganization.
He also managed to have documents from Venetian State Archives back: in 1896 a first part
and the second part in 1903.
Organization
at the present moment
During the radical organization between 1884 and 1886 - organization made by
Carminati on behalf of Sommi Picenardi - documents have been devided in 33 classes.
Between 1937 and 1948 a new and definitive configuration, based on the previous one, has
been done from Pietro Tonegato, who drew up an exhaustive inventory. Balì Fra' Alexander
da Porto Barbaran was engaded with this reorganization.
The Venetian archive is very important and unique: in fact it is not easy to find
documents dated before the napoleonic period in other Priories' archives.
The eldest document is dated 1220 and is a Papal bull signed by Onorio III with which the
Pope grants privileges to the Order; in this archive we can find a lot of Papal bulls and
very important historical documents, as papers about S. Caterina hospital and other
hospitals in Milan, Rome, Naples and Jerusalem, or correspondance about controversies
between the Order and the Republic of Venice.
The most part of these documents has not been screened yet, even because it is very
difficult tu find information in a such articulate archive.
Really very important for researches is the inventory Pietro Tonegato did: it describes
the classes of the archives. Any way it is not easy to find out where documents have been
archived.
At the present moment Tonegato’s inventory is coming to informatics: the program is
Sesamo, wich has been elaborated to contain archives of Lombardy area. This matter should
make it easier to go to the sources.
