The Grand Priory of Lombardy and Venice
of the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem, Rhodes and Malta is
composed of 10 depending delegations through which it carries on an intense activity.
Knights of the Order and volunteers fulfil charitable works as well as spiritual,
dedicating themselves to assist diseased people and to help those who lead a difficult
life.
Three different groups attend to these activities: A.M.A. (Maltese Assistance to diseased
people), C.I.S.O.M. (Civil Protection) and Pilgrimage organisation.
His Excellency Fra' Roggero Caccia
Dominioni, who collaborated with Marcello Candia, knight of Magistral Grace, to make a
stand against leprosy in Brasil for many years,
established places to diagnose in time and to attend this disease in Picos, town in the
North-East of Brazil.
In accordance with local authorities
and thanks to the help of volonteers and to the cooperation of the Grand Magistry
concerning means of transportation, Fra' Roggero diagnoses and attends the disease when
first marks left by leprosy appear, making domiciliary visit on an over 20.000 square
kilometres territory.
In 1996 in Picos a new important
project has been established: it is the 'St. John the
Baptist Centre' which aim is to assist guys said 'at risk'. They are not yet
considered 'guys living on the road' as they have a place to sleep even if their families
are not regular or completely smashed.
At the St. John the Baptist centre these young people are welcomed and in this way it is
possible to control they don't organize criminal gangs or follow into drug or prostitution
organizations. At the Centre they also receive a civil as well as a religious education.
At present, over 300 guys receive cares and Picos townhall gave free of charge an area for
the definitive construction of the Centre, as authorities ricognized the importance of
this activity.
